On 30th June I had the pleasure of skippered the Baden Powell out of King’s Lynn loaded to the gunwales with club members. The weather was superb with a brisk westerly allowing us to tear out of ‘Lynn to view a couple of dozen seals basking at the entrance to the Great Ouse. We had ‘Lynn’s Festival 2 to play us out of the town and the Cherry Sand coaster entering the docks; and a strange women on a kayak waving at us. All made for an interesting trip. It was a lovely, slightly exciting sail with full mainsail and stay-sail (I chicken out of trying the Jib). All (who wanted to) having a go at the helm.
We tacked just past Vinegar Middle to return but the skipper made a pig’s ear of it (not pulling the sheet full in before tacking) and the main sheet block decided to jump out of its bindings, effectively leaving us unable to tighten or loosen the mainsail. After sailing back up the river until past all the buoys I was able to point her into the wind and Pawel (attached to the jack stay with a safety line) and BP’s crew were able to drop the main and allow us to motor back.
All back safe and sound we retired for some light refreshment at Marriott’s Warehouse and devour Gina’s birthday cake (courtesy of Sandra).
We all had a really good time with several wanting to repeat it. I have undertaken to try and book another as there are several people who missed out on this trip (as it was first come, first served).
My personal thanks go to the 3 Baden Powell staff, we absolutely couldn’t have done it without you.
