and the outer Stem

and the outer Stem

Avoiding the knots in our Larch has meant we are turning too much of it into sawdust! So we decided to keep the inner stems (aprons) laminated but use sawn and checked timber for the outer. Note the Inner stem is used as the pattern. The scarphs were placed within the tightest curve to keep the grain as straight as possible and maintain strength. We also used epoxy on the joints rather than Collano. I suspect we will also buy some good quality Douglas Fir for the Hog as the one we cut from our Larch stock relaxed into a nice curve as soon as it was cut!
